From the Master’s Pen

Court News

I believe that our members and guests have enjoyed 2 outstanding dinners at 2 wonderful

livery halls – the St Florian’s Installation Banquet at the Armourers and Brasiers and the

Massey Shaw Charity Dinner at the Apothecaries’ Hall. The annual Carol Service at St

Mary-le-Bow was special and well attended and the Fire Industry Charity Ball was the

most successful ever raising a record £34,000 for our charities.

We have also had a number of enjoyable social events organised by the Events Commit-

tee and more are planned for the future. I am pleased that City officials and a Master have

joined us at livery dinners and Court lunches or are scheduled to attend.

I have been proud to represent the Company at more than 50 events so far including at

Buckingham Palace, House of Lords, Guildhall, The Mansion House, livery halls, City

churches and universities. I have had an exceptional and varied time.

I feel that the Company of Firefighters has an excellent reputation in the City and with

other livery companies and we are made most welcome at events.

I have been pleased to induct new Freemen and clothe new Liverymen during my year and encourage you to

introduce more prospective members or opt to become a Liveryman if you have not already taken this step.

The Management Board, established in July at the

beginning of our Livery year, is working effectively

to develop and progress the business of the Company

and report to Court.

Court has appointed 6 new Trustees to the Board of the Charitable Trust replacing the Past

Masters who recently retired after extensive service and valuable contributions. 17 members of the

Company, with a wide range of backgrounds and experience, applied for the vacancies. After

careful consideration, the Management Board recommended and Court ratified the appointment of

Freeman Andy Goves, Chief Fire Officer of Wiltshire, as Chair of the Trust and Liveryman Fran-

ces Blois, a former Westminster councillor, as Vice Chair.

Applications have been made to set up Direct Debit arrangements for members to pay Company

Quarterage and donations to the Trust. New arrangements should be in place for donations before

the end of this financial year and for Quarterage payments for 2010 / 11.

The role of Sentinel has been in place for the last three years and has proved immensely valuable

to the Company. We would like to appoint another 2 Sentinels and if you would be interested in

applying, please contact The Clerk for the Terms of Reference.
