The Beadle

John Norris -

Beadle to the Worshipful

Company of Firefighters

Arguably the most visually striking Liverymen

is our Beadle, resplendent in his tasselled gown

representing flame on a smoke background.

John has served the Firefighters through Guild,

Company and Worshipful Company.

In his early days he acted as Usher to Court

Meetings, Toastmaster and MC at lunches and

dinners. Today, his role is mainly restricted to ceremonial.

John joined the London Fire Brigade as a Junior Fireman in 1965 and

was posted to Soho fire station in 1966, subsequently to Paddington,

Kensington, Cannon Street & Knightsbridge before becoming a recruit

instructor at Southwark in 1974.

As a senior officer he served in central London before finding his forte

as a Public Relations and Press Liaison Officer in the largest PR De-

partment in any authority outside of Greater London. His last position

before premature retirement in 1991 as a Divisional Officer Grade I,

was Staff Officer to then Chief Fire Officer, a fitting end to an eventful

career.
