Success at the Great North Run
Firefighter Ian Shakespeare completed the Great North Run in 2 hours and 38
minutes. He said , although it was very painful, it was a very rewarding experience
with the friendly crowd support and camaraderie between runners - just
appreciating all the wonderful charitable reasons born out of personal connections
why people run was “uplifting”.
Ian has exceeded £1000 in his fund raising but any further contributions would be
appreciated: www.

Commissioner’s Dinner - An evening with Sir Ken Knight CBE QFSM DL
HM Government Chief Fire & Rescue Adviser
On 2nd November, the Worshipful Company of Firefighters was delighted to present an “Exclusive
Dinner” with Sir Ken Knight in the prestigious Adam Room at the Lloyd’s building.
This was an opportunity to enjoy
some superb food and wine in a
private dinner party atmosphere in a
unique location, the Lloyd’s Adam
Room decorated with glorious
paintings, ceilings and chandeliers.
The original room was designed by
Robert Adam in 1763, but the room
was transported to the 11th floor of
the new Lloyd’s building in the
heart of the city in 1986.
Sir Ken gave an overview of various issues facing the firefighting community at the present time and then
invited and answered some penetrating questions.
Present at the dinner as special guests were Lord and Lady Imbert, Lee Howell, Chief Fire Officer of
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service, ex Lord Mayor Sir David Lewis, Andy Hickmott, Assistant
Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade, Jonathan O’Neill, Managing Director of the Fire Protection
Association and Kim Robinson, Head of the Fire Service College.
Renter Warden Michael Harper introduced and welcomed the
special guests and outlined the evening’s proceedings. At the
end of the evening, the Master, Professor David Bland, thanked
all the contributors for their presence and for the excellent
discussion.
The occasion owes many thanks to the generosity and support
of the CEO of Lloyd’s, Richard Ward, the meal sponsors,
Catlin Group, headed by their CEO Paul Jardine, and the
excellent organization of WCoFF members Stuart McEwan and
Steven Neville.
