John Garrett
It is with some sadness that the Company was
informed of the sudden passing of Past Master
and Wandsworth Councillor John Garrett on
Saturday the 26th July 2014. John was very
active within the Company during its formative
years, and was Past Master of the Company in
2002 to 2003.
John Garrett served as a councillor in
Wandsworth for 20 years between 1982 and
2002, and served two terms as Mayor. He
played an active role as Wandsworth’s
representative for many years on the London
Fire and Civil Defence Authority and was also
chairman of the trustees of the Clapham Rail
Disaster Fund, a member of the Battersea branch
of the Royal British Legion and a former
Governor at Earlsfield primary school.
He was a leading fundraiser and supporter of
many charities and local voluntary organisations,
including President of St John Ambulance,
Wandsworth and Southfields Division, a governor
of the Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability, twice
President of Balham Rotary club and honorary
member of the Tooting Rotary Club.
He was also a Liveryman of the Worshipful
Company of Painter Stainers. He was a Knight of
the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem –
Knights Hospitaller and holder of the ‘Polonia
Restituta' decoration and Serving Brother of the
Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem. He also
ran a very successful local construction firm and
there are many buildings in the borough that he
helped build and improve over many years.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife
Marion and their family. He will be sorely missed
by all those who knew him.”
The Firefighters Memorial Trust has invited
members and their families to join them at their
Annual Memorial Service & Wreath Laying
Ceremony in London on Sunday 14th September
2014.
You can access details of the Service on their
website at
,where you should click on
and then
.
The Service is the Annual event to honour all
those firefighting personnel who have given their
lives in the course of their duties. After the
Church Service Standards and all attendees
Parade to the National Firefighters Memorial
where there is a short Wreath Laying Ceremony
Andrew, a Freeman of the Company, has let us
know that, at the last Board Meeting of The Fire
Fighters Charity, he was elected Deputy
Chairman of the Fire Fighters Charity. He is very
happy to discuss any issues that arise in regards
to the Charity and to act as a point of contact
between them and the Company.
It is wonderful to report that Liveryman Jonathan
Hall was awarded the Queen’s Fire Service
Medal (QFSM) in this year’s Queen’s Birthday
Honours. Jonathan was Chief Fire Officer for
Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and he
has recently taken up a new appointment as
Director of Training and Organisational
development at the Fire Service College at
Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucester. Jonathan’s award
is a great tribute to him and I am sure all
members will wish to join me in congratulating
him on his achievement.
