THE SALAMANDER | AUGUST 2016

Live burns, tower rescues and hose games

were among the fire-related activities that

attracted thousands to a fire station open day.

The event at Rushmoor also featured a

firefighter dunking station, an extrication

display and an engine simulation ride.

There were a dozen vehicles on display,

including specialist and vintagemodels, and the

public got the chance to meet representatives

from all blue light services and the heroic yet

cute fire dogs.

The event was held between 10am and 4pm

on Saturday 30th May and marked 26 years of

the station being open as well as raising about

£1,000 for The Fire Fighters Charity.

One of the organisers Watch Manager Ian

Crawley said: “It has been incredible. We have

had huge crowds through the door and it is hard

to point to any one part that was most popular.

“Everyone has worked very hard to make sure

it was a great day and we have highlighted

safety messages too.

“It is great to engage with the community like

this and to see them come out to support us.”

There were areas where the over-65s could try

out the STEER programme or where people

could learn how to save a life.

The station was filled with photos, information

and videos showing what the service is all

about as well as a mangled car to reinforce the

Project Pictogram road safety campaign.

There was also a smoke machine, face-

painting, a Fireman Sam mascot, music, a

barbecue and tea and cake.
