A rather damp and drizzly outing, but thoroughly enjoyed by all assembled, due to the superb depth of knowledge and thoroughly engaging style of our Clerkenwell & Islington Guide, Steve Bates. Kicking off outside The Old Bailey, we quickly progressed to the cherubic fat boy that marks the halt of the Great Fire of London, 1666.
There was much to discover around St Bart’s Hospital, including the site of the hanging, drawing, and quartering of Sir William Wallace on 23rd August 1305. We moved on to the Lady Chapel of the delightful St Bartholomew the Great, where Benjamin Franklin, Founding Father of the United States, learned his trade as an apprentice printer in 1725.
As many of you will know, Benjamin was a keen Volunteer Fireman and founded the Union Fire Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1736, the first of its kind in the US. This engaging tour continued across Smithfield Market and Charterhouse Square to the Headquarters of the Order of St John and then on to Clerkenwell Green and Farringdon.
Massive thanks to our Guide, Steve Bates, who donated his entire fee to our charity, Worshipful Company of Firefighters Charitable Trust (Registered Charity No. 1182241). All photos: Liveryman Max Dissanayake
