Master Andrew F Phillips OLJ JP GIFireE

Andrew F Phillips JP brings a lifetime of public service, international collaboration, and community leadership to his role as Master of the Worshipful Company of Firefighters for 2025–2026.

Born in Georgetown, British Guyana, Andrew moved to the UK in 1979 to continue his education and went on to build a distinguished career in the London Fire Brigade. Rising to the rank of Assistant Divisional Officer 2, he responded to some of the most critical emergencies in recent British history — including the Kings Cross Fire (1987), the Marchioness disaster (1989), and the 7/7 Bombings (2005). He was awarded multiple service medals and earned the RSPCA’s Bronze Medal for rescuing five horses from a burning stable.

His impact stretched beyond emergency response. Andrew played a key role in helping develop the Uganda Fire Service and led pan-London Home Fire Safety initiatives that advanced both public protection and policy. Throughout his career, he has also mentored countless younger officers, many of whom have gone on to lead and innovate in their own right — a legacy he considers just as important as any operational achievement.

Andrew joined the Worshipful Company of Firefighters in 2011, became a Liveryman in 2013, and entered the Court of Assistants in 2015. He has chaired the Events Committee and spearheaded the Fire Industry Charity Ball, championing causes that reflect the Company’s values of service, camaraderie, and excellence. He now steps into the role of Master with a vision rooted in inclusion, continuity, and real-world impact.

Outside the Company, Andrew has served as a Justice of the Peace for nearly 15 years, regularly sitting in Crown Court appeal hearings.

A passionate all-round sportsman, Andrew has achieved success across athletics, rugby, and cricket. He currently represents the Essex Seniors in cricket and coaches with the Essex Falcons Ability team. Earlier in life, he also held a British Gliding Association Gliding Certificate and Solo Endorsement — a mark of his lifelong appetite for challenge, discipline, and high standards.

Andrew is a devoted father to two daughters and partner to Diane. He enjoys long countryside walks and cooking for friends and family — always with a generous spirit and sharp sense of humour.
