Use your extra hour wisely this weekend when clocks go back, Cambs FRS

As people go round the house changing their clocks this weekend (October 26/27), Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents to think about fire safety with the extra hour they have.

As the days get darker and the temperature drops, it is vitally important that residents test their smoke alarms, but also ensure everyone in the house knows how to escape the property if a fire happens.

Group Commander Paul Clarke, the Service’s head of Community Fire Safety, said: “With the clocks going back it is a timely reminder for people to make sure they have smoke alarms throughout their houses and that they are working. Using the extra hour to test the alarms and also make sure family members are aware of how to quickly leave the property should a fire happen is time well spent.”

It is also from this time of year that the fire service sees an increase in chimney fires as temperatures drop and residents start to use log fires and woodburners.

Paul added: “If you have a working chimney it is really important that you get it swept and the brickwork inspected, preferably before using it for the first time this season. This will help ensure the fire doesn’t spread further than it should. A good use of the extra hour this weekend would be to contact a chimney sweep.

“It’s also a good time to check in with elderly friends and neighbours that are living on their own. Please take the time to ensure they have working smoke alarms and give them a quick test. If you are concerned for their welfare, particularly as the weather gets colder, contact us as they might be eligible for a free Safe and Well visit, which not only provides information about fire safety, but also staying warm and safe from crime.”
