Emergency One (UK) Limited was established in 1989 in the Scottish town of Cumnock, by Frank Morran, a decision based on his extensive experience within the UK fire appliance manufacturing sector. Since then, the company’s growth has been predicated on the adherence to a steady and measured expansion year on year, recognising the importance of their people (a best-in-class Trade Apprenticeship program was established in Year 1), build quality and reliability, and on- time delivery.
In 2012, the company had outgrown the original factory unit, and re-located to a larger, custom- designed facility within the same industrial estate in Cumnock. The management team changed too, with a management buyout led by William Burns, Mike Madsen and Robert Wells, all of whom already had many years’ of experience within the organisation.
An already busy year, 2012 also saw the addition of Clan Tools to the group, and the partnership with Magirus GmbH established.
Today the company is firmly
established as UK market leaders in the manufacture, service and support of specialist Fire and Rescue Service appliances, along with a growing export presence worldwide. Their operations remain headquartered in Cumnock, Scotland – with the vast majority of their workforce (of over 200 people) operating from two production facilities in their now 8-acre campus.
Their People
They are proud to have over a 90% track record of retaining all members of their team. They place particular emphasis on regular training and refresher courses for all of their employees. They are proud to be the largest employer in the town of Cumnock and in particular, they heavily support the recruitment of apprentices - of which they currently have over 40 young people learning various trade skills over a four- year program(sourced with the assistance of the Prince’s Trust). The majority of the apprentices are retained to ensure continuity of their excellent and diverse design, engineering, electrical, fabrication and manufacturing skill
sets required for such a unique manufacturing sector.
Customers
Emergency One manufacture appliances for most of the UK’s Fire & Rescue Services, including London Fire Brigade (where they are supplying all of the new generation DPL (Dual Pump Ladder) appliances and Magirus Turntable Ladder aerial units), Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, all three Services in Wales, and the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service. Their sister company, Clan Tools & Plant Limited, supply Operational firefighting and rescue equipment to the same market.
The Worshipful Company of Firefighters would like to thank Emergency One (UK) Ltd who have generously supported the production and distribution costs of this issue and that we are grateful to Mike Madsen, MD, for his collaboration with the Company.
