MASTER CALLS FOR NEW TALENT TO SHOW ITSELF
In his Common Hall speech, after formal election as Master, Bryan Spearman noted that we had many members within the Company who had considerable talents in many fields, but unless some of that capability was known about, members could easily slip into a “knife and fork” role, merely attending dinners and similar functions. “The Company was very keen to move ahead particularly in the field of education - its' involvement with the London Fire Cadets had worked well, hosting an annual City Fire Lecture had advanced real city interest in key fire related topics and “The City Dinner”, also discussing fire related topics of the day, had created a means of dynamic debate in fire education.”
“I have recently enjoyed discussions within the City Livery Education initiative and through City Link have become aware that teachers are looking for experts in key fields to challenge and mentor pupils in seeking to attain rewarding careers - I feel that this might be something that we in the WCoFF might be able to help with. To do so, we need to be better at knowing the strength of talents we undoubtedly have within our Company to help push such initiatives forward.”
The Master thought that putting together a database of talent would help. He also hoped that in his year of office, he would be able to meet with as many members as possible to have meaningful discussions on where they might be able to use their talents for the Company. He was hoping to arrange some informal evenings with Past Master David Cartwright when a start could be made to this effort.
