Painter-Stainers Golf Match
On Saturday 21st September, the WCoFF hosted the annual Fire Industry Charity Ball, held again this year at the Portman hotel. After the reception and a superb meal, there was dancing to Nicole and her big band. Many companies representing the width of the UK fire industry had taken tables and brought along guests. It was a very enjoyable and fun evening all round all in aid of the Worshipful Company of Firefighters’ Charitable Trust.
The setting for the annual match between worshipful companies of the Firefighters and the Painter-Stainers was the lovely Wilderness Golf club near Sevenoaks in Kent. The format was slightly changed this year in that we were joined in a wider competition by other livery companies, including the World Traders, Plumbers, Loriners and Marketors.
Jeremy Beech magnificently organised the Firefighters team, although he was unable to play himself and we succeeded in not losing to the Painter-Stainers (it was deemed a draw), but, alas, we did not win the overall prize which went to the Loriners. Ken Barnes took the trophy as the best Firefighter golfer on the day (but as the magnificent trophy was not available to be handed over, he had to be contented with the award of a golf ball).
Firefighters’ Memorial Trust Wreath Laying Service
The Firefighters’ Memorial Trust invited members of the Company to join them at their Annual Memorial Service & Wreath Laying Ceremony in London on Sunday 8th September 2013. The Service is an annual event to honour all those firefighting personnel who have given their lives in the course of their duties.
After the church service, Standards and all attendees paraded to the National Firefighters’ Memorial where there was a short Wreath Laying Ceremony. The Master, Beryl Jeffrey, laid a wreath on behalf of the WCoFF.
Paul Settle, the secretary of the Firefighters’ Memorial Trust has been awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire in the recent Queen's Birthday Honours. Although Paul isn't a member of the Company it is still a proud achievement for the fire service community and Paul is well know to the WCoFF as many of our members are active within the Memorial Trust. We would like to add our congratulations to Paul for this well deserved award.
