Brixham’s outdoor seawater swimming pool is an art deco icon and only one of a few left in this country. It is maintained by a committed team of volunteers known as: “The Friends of Shoalstone”, who raise funds and carry out the maintenance work.
Fearing that the pool had been facing closure, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, White Watch Manager, Mark Rollings from Brixham decided to take action: "Due to the current financial climate Torbay council has cut the funding for the pool and last summer it was only open for a very short season.
“I felt it would be a good idea to see if the crew would be interested in volunteering to help clean and paint the pool ready for the summer season. The positive response from the crew was overwhelming, so I approached the Friends of Shoalstone pool and to say they bit my hand off would be an understatement!
“Over the winter months the pool collects sand and debris from the winter storms so in April we spent a day cleaning it, followed by four days in May repainting the pool and surrounding areas.
“This has been a great opportunity to help the voluntary group refurbish the pool and keep this valuable asset open. It has also been a great way for us to engage with the Brixham community as this is a popular pool enjoyed by thousands of people, locals and visitors every year and is an integral part of our leisure facilities.”
“The Friends of Shoalstone” are instrumental in ensuring that the pool remains open to the public. Without their efforts to repair the winter damage every Spring, it is unlikely that it would remain open and free for all.
Judith will be remembered by many of our members, in particular by the clerk and PMs that served around the time of Viv’s year.
Judith gave significant help to Viv on the re- establishment of the “Meet the Firefighters” event, as well as acting as an excellent proof- reader and producer of the annual Order of Service. She also assisted with much of the admin and documentation related to the sponsorship for the Ball and not least the Salamander.
During her last days she was nursed at home by Viv as her main carer. This is a role he described as a privilege but impossible without the help of the Hospice at Home team co- ordinated by Havens Hospices with support from the Marie Curie Charity.
In memory of Judith, Viv and a team from Vimpex, would like to help to ensure others have this same opportunity to care for loved ones in their own home during “end of life” - the most difficult time most of us will experience.
Therefore, Viv, his three sons, Judith’s brother, nephews, grandsons and a close business associate will be cycling from Great Wakering in Essex to Paris on Sunday 28th July 2013. Their plan is to arrive at the Eiffel Tower on the morning of the following Thursday. Whilst many of the Firefighters will have donated at Judith’s funeral, another opportunity exists to mark Judith’s life and contribution to the company by donating to this fundraising challenge:
