Former fire service colleague celebrates 100th birthday

A former fire service employee from Cambridge celebrated turning 100 yesterday (Tuesday March 3, 2020).

To mark Doreen Piggott’s milestone birthday, Station Commander for Cambridge, Danny Kelly, and firefighters from Red Watch Cambridge paid Doreen a special visit, to wish her a happy birthday and present her with a card and flowers on behalf of Chief Fire Officer, Chris Strickland.

Doreen started working for the fire service in East Anglia in 1941 and aside from Control, she was the first female uniformed member of regional HQ staff. The regional group disbanded in 1948 and she was transferred to Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service  where she was a Personal Assistance to the Chief Fire Officer.

Station Commander Danny Kelly, Commented: “We’re so pleased we could help make Doreen’s birthday extra special. It’s not often we get to celebrate such an occasion, and it was lovely to hear all about Doreen’s career with us.”
